I am a 36-year-old journalist working with the New Vision, the biggest English newspaper in Uganda as a senior sub-editor. I hold a bachelors degree in mass communication from Uganda Christian University, having graduated in October 2009. My journalism career started in 2008 when I was an intern reporter at Step FM in Mbale district, eastern Uganda.

At Step FM, I used to gather and write news stories of events in the Elgon sub-region. After graduating in 2009, I joined The East African newspaper as a freelance reporter. At the East African newspaper, my work involved writing news stories and taking photos of local events that are relevant to the East African region.

In January 2011, I joined the UCU Standard as the editor.  The UCU Standard is a newspaper run by Uganda Christian University to train journalism students. My role here involved mentoring students in practical journalism.

In 2012, I joined New Vision as a junior sub-editor and I have since become senior sub-editor. In this position, my roles include:

  • Editing stories to suit the newspaper’s editorial policy.
  • Ensuring that copy is free of libel and inaccuracies and coherent.
  • Re-writing stories, in consultation with reporters to make them compelling.
  • Designing attractive and easy-to-navigate pages.
  • Ranking stories in terms of importance.
  • Coach reporters to give them feedback on their stories to minimize mistakes
  • Liaise with the photo editor to generate graphics which best illustrate stories.
