Editorial Director, Politics, Policy, and Health/Science

Vox is looking for a dynamic leader to oversee its politics, policy and health and science teams. This editor will be part of the senior leadership team at Vox, and will manage the editors who lead sections examining the 2024 elections, Congress, the White House and federal agencies, federal and state policies and those working to affect them, scientific innovations and health care. 

This editor will create a plan to make every Vox story meet a high standard and ensure each offers clarity on questions our audience has, adds new context or challenges preconceived notions. The ideal candidate will have experience in political, policy, health or science journalism, including leading teams in those fields. They will also be able to help elevate and amplify key ideas circulating in policy and scientific circles; unpack dense, confusing debates; and ensure that some stories spark curiosity and awe.They will ensure their reporters offer distinctive analysis, write features with deep reporting, or fact-heavy explainers.

This person should not only understand Vox’s explanatory mission but also help define the organization’s unique role in this space. The ideal candidate should create and execute an ambitious plan with large teams, and guide our writers and editors to produce approachable and original stories. This editor should have an interest in helping writers and editors shine and grow.

WHAT YOU’LL DO

• Work with the teams to create and implement a vision for Vox’s coverage of these important topic areas, and be ultimately responsible for making sure the coverage meets a high threshold of excellence
• Ensure that the team is offering clarity on the most important policies, controversies, or news moments 
• Help identify how to bring discipline and deliberation to story assignments
• Lead and guide ambitious teams of reporters and editors
• Work with the audience team, audio, video, and other editors across the Vox newsroom to elevate the work across mediums

WHO YOU ARE

• A deep understanding of and, preferably, a background in coverage of politics, policy, or health and science, or closely related topics. 
• An ambitious appetite for strong, distinctive work 
• A knack for managing editors and writers
• High editorial standards
• A desire to lead and grow as a leader

PAY TRANSPARENCY

The salary range listed below represents the minimum and maximum base pay for this position at the time of this posting. Final salary offered to the candidate selected for the position will be based on factors including but not limited to the candidate’s skills and experience.

Pay Range

$140,000—$188,000 USD
